Bluewaters Power Station Expansion

Due to unprecedented population growth and a booming economy, Western Australia urgently requires new and diverse sources of electricity to meet likely future demand.

Griffin Energy is working to meet this demand, with a balanced portfolio of new electricity generation projects.

To help meet the State's power needs, Griffin Energy is proposing an expansion of its Bluewaters Power Station. Located within the Coolangatta Industrial Estate, approximately four kilometres north east of the town of Collie in Western Australia, the Bluewaters facilities have been designed to be developed in a modular fashion, to grow in step with power demand growth on the State's main electricity grid.

The proposed Bluewaters Power Station Expansion comprises two new coal-fired, base-load generators, each capable of producing 208 megawatts. It would bring the number of generating units at the Bluewaters site to four, and lift the facility’s total output to approximately 830 megawatts.

The first two units, Bluewaters I and II, are now online. The two proposed new units are planned for completion in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

The expansion project will meet all environmental regulations, and will use modern and efficient emissions controls technology throughout.

Griffin Energy will also ensure the Bluewaters Power Station Expansion project will be capable of adopting carbon capture technology in the future, once this developing technology becomes commercially viable in Western Australia.

The proposed expansion will meet all environmental regulations, and is designed to ensure the health and wellbeing of Collie and surrounding communities, with the added benefit of job creation and strengthening the economy of Collie and the south west.

Environmental approval including community consultation on the project is now underway.
